Everything You Need to Know for Your SS test on Oct. 8th

Regions and Counties Study Guide:

Part 1: You will be given a sentence and asked to tell what region is being described in the sentence.

Part 2: You will be given a word bank and asked to fill in sentences about different facts of each region.

Part 3: You will be given two questions that you need to write short answers for. The two topics to study for this portion of the test are: information of the fault line and give reasons about why you would like to live in a certain region of Maryland.

Part 4: You will need to list all 23 counties in Maryland. I will give you the first letter of each county and you need to name it.

Part 5: I will ask you to identify the three regions of Maryland and identify the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay on a map.

How to study:

Look at the note sheet we took in class.

Look at the list and map of the counties in Maryland.

Notes on the Atlantic Coastal Plain

Chesapeake Bay-largest body of water in region

Cities: Bowie, Ocean City, Salisbury, Chestertown, Annapolis

Natural Features: Oceans, Bay, Beaches, Sand Dunes, wetlands

Lowest elevation of all three regions

Brackish Water: water that is ½ salt water and ½ fresh water

This region is in the eastern and southern part of MD

Calvert Cliffs: close to Chesapeake Bay, can find fossils there and it was once covered by the ocean

Warmest region

Crabs, oysters and clams are in the Bay

Assateague Island: has wild horses

Ocean City is MD’s only ocean resort

Tobacco farming is popular in Southern MD and it has been for more than 300 years

Susquehanna River flows into the northern part of the Bay

Delmarva Peninsula is the land between the Bay and the Ocean, Virginia is at the southern tip

Plain: low, flat land

Notes on the Piedmont Plateau

Region is in the central part of Maryland

Cities: Frederick, Rockville, Gaithersburg

Frederick County is located in this region

Fall Line-imaginary line connecting waterfalls where the land has the last steep drop, this line separates the region from the Atlantic Coastal Plain

Plateau: high, leveled land

 

Notes on the Appalachian Region

Coldest region in MD

Includes Allegany, Garrett and Washington counties

Deep Creek Lake is in this region

Backbone Mt. is in this region.
